VIOLET
I hated talking about my parents, hated talking about Palludah, and most of all, right then, I hated Eryx for dredging all this stuff up. And for making me question my bonds with the Abbaddoths. Because if I didn't have that, what did I have? Where did I belong to if not with them?
To the humans, who had forsaken me and so many other children? What else, where else was there for me?
I hated remembering how I found out about my parents. Oh, they weren't the only ones. Thousands of parents had done what they did. Faced with the reality of being forced to surrender their youngest child, many opted to have anotherâan expendable baby. They couldn't bear to give up their youngest, so they created usâthe expendable onesâif they had the time, which I guess my parents did. And since they already knew they would have to give me up, they just decided not to get attached.
At four, I was too little to wonder why it was mostly my sister or brothers taking care of me, not my parents, but when I got older, the puzzle pieces fell into place. I was created for the sole purpose of being given to the Abbaddoths.
Something I had wrestled with my whole life.
Because if it hadn't been me, it would have been Vivian.
And I wasn't sure where exactly I stood on that.
Vivian had been my world, my caretaker, in a way my mother, even if she had only been a kid herself. I could never forget the memories of Vivian singing me to sleep, reading me a bedtime story, playing with me, soothing me when I got hurt.
And yetâ¦
And yet, I hated her too.
Because she wasn't the one they gave up.
She got to stay with our parents and my brothers.
And I hated myself for hating her the most.
I turned, not waiting for Eryx. I needed to do something or I would go insane with my thoughts, my memories.
He held me back by the elbow and asked the question I had been dreading. "So you were four when you went to live with the Abbaddoths?"
I grunted a reply, already sensing where this would go and not wanting to talk about it.
"And you were ten when you went to the Pit?"
Another grunt.
"What happened to you between four and ten?"
I took a deep breath in. Yeah, what happened to me between four and ten?
"Storytime is over. Let's go scouting." I snapped.
To his credit, he didn't try to hold me back as I marched blindly into the direction we came from earlier. Hoping not to run into a boulder or fall down a hole we might have inadvertently sidestepped on our way here.
I heard his sigh as he followed me. Slowly the tunnel became lower, and I smirked at the thought of him having to duck. It was the little things in life that kept me entertained.
It didn't take long until I saw a faint light ahead of me, and rigorously, I aimed for it.
"Don't just run out," Eryx warned.
